Definition
Any characteristic, number, or quantity that can be measured, manipulated, or controlled in a study. Variables can be independent (manipulated), dependent (measured), or confounding (uncontrolled).
Example
In a drug trial, the independent variable is the drug dosage, and the dependent variable is the patient outcome.
