Confounding Variable

Definition

An extraneous variable that correlates with both the independent and dependent variables, potentially distorting the true relationship between them.

Example

In a study linking coffee consumption to heart disease, smoking may be a confounding variable if coffee drinkers are also more likely to smoke.
